Below, you will find a list of some of the essential and useful verbs in Spanish, some of which you will use in most sentences. It is obviously no good being great at your tenses if you have no knowledge of infinitives (verbs in the to... form e.g. to eat, to play). Also, you sometimes need to know when to use a verb when there can be a choice:
To talk about health: "How are you?" "I am sick." "�C�mo est�s?" "Estoy enferma."
To talk about locations: persons, places, things: "It is here." The icecream is on the table." "Est� aqu�." "El helado est� en la mesa."
To speak of a state or condition to do with people: "I am not happy." "My mother is not alive." "No estoy contento/a." "Mi madre no est� vivo."
For describing a state or condition of things and places: "The shop is closed." "The coffee is hot." "La tienda est� cerrada." "El caf� est� caliente."
ESTAR is also used with the Present Participle of a verb to form the progressive present. "I am studying." "Estoy estudiando." More information on the Present Participle can be found elsewhere in the Verbs section.
