This tense is the other past tense along with the Imperfect. It expresses an action that was completed in the past:
As you can see from above the Preterit Tense is relatively simple to know when to use; however there are quite a few irregular verbs. Here is how to form it:

Not too difficult, and a very useful tense. Remember: as well as "I went" the Preterit also means "I did go" or "I ate" and "I did eat".
